Labor’s internal brawl over pokies is getting worse, with Rebecca White’s own running mate in Lyons, Jen Butler, publicly calling for pokies to be removed from the pubs and clubs in Lyons.
By refusing to have a position on pokies, Ms White has effectively painted herself into a corner. If Ms White eventually announces a policy that supports pokies in the community, at least three Labor candidates - Ms Butler, Mr Cox and Mrs Ogilvie - will effectively be campaigning against Ms White and against the Labor Party platform.
There is absolute chaos in Labor’s ranks, because not only is Ms White too inexperienced to manage a significant rift like this, she has absolutely no idea what she stands for.
While Ms White is too weak to outline a policy on pokies, her candidates are doing it for her. What this shows is that Ms White doesn’t have the capacity to provide strong leadership or direction and if she were to ever become Premier she would simply be a puppet of the unions and the Greens.
