Labor opposes major high school upgrades

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to growing the economy, creating jobs and boosting education outcomes.

That's why we announced as part of the 2015-16 Budget a major investment to upgrade a number of high schools across the State.  This investment will create local jobs and provide better facilities for our kids to learn in and our teachers to teach in.

Yet, almost unbelievably, Bryan Green is opposed.  He told the media yesterday that "...to just build classrooms and fancy things up actually doesn't make a difference." *

Will Mr Green and Ms O'Byrne go and visit the parents of children who will benefit from these upgrades and tell them that investing in their future is a waste of money?

Will Ms O'Byrne pull Mr Green into line and tell him that some of the school facilities we will be upgrading haven't been renovated since the 1960s?

I know the Labor and Liberal parties have their differences from time to time, but surely investing in schools is something that everyone can get behind.

Here is the list of schools that Bryan Green doesn't want to see improved:

  • Kings Meadows, $7.2 million to redevelop B block, and refurbish and modernise teaching areas;
  • Latrobe, $10 million for contemporary flexible learning environments, visual and performing arts, hospitality and gymnasium facilities;
  • Parklands, $9.1 million to construct a performing arts centre, canteen and student centre, and refurbish teaching areas;
  • Prospect, $8.5 million to refurbish and modernise existing teaching areas and hospitality facilities;
  • Riverside, $12 million to create contemporary and flexible learning facilities;
  • Smithton, $7 million for the redevelopment of leaning facilities, including science and visual and performing arts; and
  • Taroona, $2.1 million to build general learning areas, a science facility and home economics facilities.

We are also continuing major infrastructure upgrades at Brooks, Devonport, Montrose Bay, New Town and Wynyard high schools.
