Labor hypocrisy on Children’s Commissioner

Labor have today asked the Government to reveal confidential details of the type that former Labor Minister Lin Thorp had to publicly apologise for discussing in 2011.

Lin Thorp and Lara Giddings both were forced to apologise after Ms Thorp identified where a particular candidate was ranked in the selection process*. Yet today Rebecca White asked the Human Services Minister to reveal how an unsuccessful candidate was rated in the most recent selection process.

Labor has also made clear that they wanted the Government to overrule the independent selection panel which advised the Minister that Ms McLean was the most suitable applicant for the role of Children’s Commissioner.

The Government has acted exactly in line with proper process and the advice of an independent selection panel. Labor wants to politicise an independent position, and to repeat their past mistakes of revealing inappropriate confidential details about individuals' applications.
