Labor-Green opposition joined at the hip

Labor’s confirmation today that it will not support guaranteed jail time for sex offenders and those who seriously assault our frontline workers is alarmingly out of touch with the community and puts them yet again in lockstep with the Greens.

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government has a strong record of protecting victims and especially survivors of child sexual abuse, as a result of our nation leading reforms in response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse.

The Tasmanian community has been rightly asking what will the Labor Party do on this important reform? And today they got their disappointing but predictable answer from Sarah Lovell and a party bereft of ideas with no regard for community expectations, who confirmed they will not support guaranteed jail time for these serious offenders.

This decision proves Labor’s alleged shift away from the Greens was nothing but a blatant stunt.

These important reforms to protect vulnerable Tasmanians were overwhelmingly endorsed by Tasmanians at the last election, supported by groups representing survivors of sexual abuse such as Beyond Abuse, and are clearly in line with community expectations to keep our community safe.
