Kick-starting the Red Shield Appeal

The Tasmanian Government is proud to kick-start the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal with a $30,000 donation.

The Red Shield Appeal is the Salvation Army’s major annual fundraiser and ensures the charity can continue to support its social and community services across 20 Tasmanian centres.

Every dollar raised ensures the delivery of about 70 Salvation Army programs that support Tasmanians from emergency relief, to family violence support and outreach.

More than a thousand Tasmanians are expected to volunteer to help raise funds, including those taking part in the second annual Tasmanian Red Shield Ride, which concludes in Hobart today.

The riders have peddled about 500km across the state over the past six days, epitomising the immense community spirit that the Red Shield Appeal stirs in many of us.

I encourage Tasmanians to dig deep and donate to this very worthy cause.

The Tasmanian Government is proud to provide $30,000 in funding to the appeal, through the Community Participation and Appeals Fund.

With the Budget back on track, we are able to invest in supporting vulnerable. The upcoming State Budget will again include $300 million worth of concessions to support Tasmanians, including assistance for Public Housing Rent Assistance, Metro concessions, Electricity rebates and Local Government Rates.

We are also providing $25.57 million to new and direct actions to address family violence, $1.2 million over four years for the emergency food relief sector, and implementing the new Joined Up Human Services project.
