Jobs figures continue to soar in the building sector

More Tasmanians than ever are finding work with 14,660 jobs created since the 2014 election according to the most recent ABS job figures.

The figures confirm our long-term plan is delivering for Tasmanians, with almost a quarter of a million Tasmanians now employed.

Importantly, employment in the Tasmanian building and construction sector is at its highest ever levels, with the year-average number of Tasmanians working in the industry at 23,200.

These figures build on the latest ABS Building Activity statistics which show in the March 2018 quarter, dwelling commencements were up 31.4 per cent compared to the same time last year.

This was the highest growth rate in Australia and nearly ten times the national average.

The Hodgman Liberal Government will do everything possible to create jobs and grow the economy.  That’s why we’re supporting continued growth in the sector, by committing a record investment of $2.6 billion in infrastructure in the 2018-19 State Budget.

This includes more than $233 million for the North West Coast to be spent on projects such as:

  • $35 million in capital upgrades for the Mersey Community Hospital;
  • A new 8-bed North West Regional Hospital Acute Medical Unit – $17.6 million; and
  • More than $24 million over four years to upgrade State roads across the North-West and the West Coast, including improvements to the Bass Highway, and our West Coast Roads Package.

These projects will help further stimulate the economy and see continued jobs growth in the North West of the State.
