Investing in Our International Hockey Reputation

The Liberal Government is committed to encouraging an active lifestyle, particularly among our children.

Ensuring our sports facilities are state-of-the-art encourages a greater participation in sport and fitness.

That's why we are delivering our commitment to invest $600,000 over the next three years to replace the artificial turf at the New Town and St Leonards hockey centres.

This investment is critical to cementing Tasmania's place on the national and international tournament circuit.

Hockey Tasmania hosts at least two national tournaments, attracting around 800 visitors to the state and injecting $1.12 million into the local economy.

The upgrade will also assist Hockey Tasmania's bid to host the Federation of International Hockey Women's World League in 2017.

Hockey Tasmania anticipates this event will attract 5000 people to Tasmania and inject an estimated $7 million into the state's economy.

Importantly, the new turf will also benefit more than130,000 Tasmanian players, spectators and families who participate and support local hockey events every year.

We are also contributing about $55,000 a year to Hockey Tasmania through the State Grants Program through Sport and Recreation Tasmania.

It is this Government's target to ensure Tasmania has the healthiest population in Australia by 2025. Sports like hockey will help us to achieve this.
