Inexperienced White misleads on minority Government

Labor’s inexperienced new leader, Rebecca White, has sought to mislead Tasmanians about the Labor Party, and minority Government.

Yesterday, and this morning on radio, Ms White claimed that ALP rules prohibit governing in minority.

“We also have very clear party rules that say that we can’t do deals with minority parties”*

This is completely false and Ms White knows it. The ALP rules actually say:

“In the event the Party finds itself in a position to form a minority Government following a state election, the Parliamentary Labor Party shall not form a minority Government unless that decision has firstly been referred to the Administrative Committee for endorsement.”

So contrary to Ms White’s claims, it is very clear that Labor can – and we know from history will – do a deal with the Greens to form minority Government, should the circumstances arise.

The fact is, only the Liberals can form majority Government, and only the Liberals can be trusted not to do a deal with the Greens.
