Will Hodgman, Premier

Increasing transparency and accountability for MPs

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to the highest stands of public disclosure, transparency and accountability.

As part of that commitment, the Government will next year introduce amendments to the Parliamentary Disclosure of Interests Act which will:

  • Require the register of interests to be published online
  • Require the disclosure of the interests of spouses, dependent children and other dependents
  • Require the disclosure of a boarder range of gifts and benefits, such as non-monetary gifts.

The amendments are based on recommendations put forward by key stakeholders including the Integrity Commission, and the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner.

Public comment will be sought on the proposed changes until 3rd February, with a Bill to be presented to the Autumn session of Parliament.

These changes build on measures already undertaken by my Government to improve transparency and accountability, including regular disclosure of ministerial spending, and the publication of all right to information to disclosures, within 48 hours.
