Increasing transparency and accountability

The Tasmanian Government is committed to increasing transparency and accountability by enhancing and extending the routine disclosure of information across all government departments.

From the end of June, 37 new routine data releases will be made available online, including:

  • more information on government procurement, including value of contracts awarded to Tasmanian businesses,
  • additional Land Titles Office and Valuer-General’s Office property data,
  • information on the number of industrial hemp and poppy active licences, and
  • information on the number of taxi licences and members of the Taxi subsidy program.

In October, a further suite of routine disclosure items will be published online ensuring Tasmanians have even greater access to up to date information on the activities of government.

These reforms build on steps already undertaken by this Government, including the first regular disclosure of ministerial spending, online disclosure of Parliamentarians’ register of interests and the publication of all right to information to disclosures within 48 hours of issue.

Since the Government’s initial transparency and accountability reforms, there have been;

  • 341 Right to Information requests published online,
  • 168 separate data releases across all Departments, including organisational structures, governance polices, information on major policy and program initiatives, employment and workforce statistics, Senior Executive Service information, telecommunications expenditure, disclosures of gifts, benefits and hospitality, and
  • 135 individual expenditure reports, which have disclosed on a six-monthly basis the monthly expenditure by each Minister and their office.

Further, to make access to this information easier a new Government Information Gateway has been established on the Department of Premier and Cabinet’s website.
