Inaugural Australian Antarctic Festival

Hobart is the gateway to the Antarctic and the hub of Australia’s Antarctic program, making it the appropriate setting for a new biennial festival celebrating our connection to the frozen continent.

Today I was pleased to represent the Premier and officially open the new event in Tasmania’s burgeoning event calendar – the inaugural Australian Antarctic Festival.

This new Festival adds to Tasmania’s growing reputation as a destination to experience unique events and boutique festivals.

Tasmanians and visitors alike will be able to celebrate our links with the Southern Ocean and Antarctica, and show our appreciation of the hard work of our family, friends and neighbours who undertake important work in the Antarctic sector.

The program is packed full with a number of free and admission only events, including ship tours of the Aurora Australis or the L’Astrolabe, an Antarctic Expo held in Princess Wharf No. 1 shed, an Antarctic Film Festival at the State Cinema, a Gala Dinner on Saturday Night and a huskies run and picnic on the Hobart waterfront on Sunday.

The Government is proud to be supporting this new biennial event with $35,000 in seed funding through Events Tasmania. I also wish to acknowledge the contribution made to the festival by the two other major supporters; the Hobart City Council and Antarctic tourism operator, Chimu Adventures.
