Improving education outcomes is at the heart of this government, that's why the Liberals are delivering on our commitment to improve educational support for people living with a disability.
Appointing a Ministerial Taskforce that will drive education for students with disabilities is just one of many commitments the Liberals are already delivering as part of our 100 Day Plan.
This independent taskforce will examine the system that failed to support the education of students with special needs in our schools for too long under the Labor Government.
I know a number of parents believe we can do better to meet the needs of their children, and I agree.
This taskforce will help remove the limitations that stop families from being able to choose the right school for their child, whether that is a support school or mainstream.
The expert team will assess the learning strategies and provision of education materials, how best to report on educational outcomes for students with a disability, disability awareness training for teachers and transitional planning for post school options for students.
Experienced educator Cheryl Larcombe will chair the taskforce, bringing decades of experience from classrooms, including those on Tasmania's North-West Coast, and expert work with children with disability and leading the implementation of national initiatives for Tasmania.
Representatives will be invited from organisations including Autism Tasmania, Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby, Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Commission, Australian Association of Special Education, Australian Society of Intellectual Disability and Australian Education Union.
Expressions of interest will also be called to fill two community positions on the taskforce.
The taskforce will report recommendations back to me by the end of June 2015.
We want to get the right information to make an informed, evidence-based decision to improve education for Tasmanian students with a disability and provide the support their families deserve.
