Implementing the recommendations of the Child Abuse Royal Commission

The first-year report on the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse was released today outlining the Hodgman Liberal Government's significant progress in implementing the recommendations.

The Government committed to report on progress through five consecutive annual reports to be tabled in Parliament.

The first progress report provides details of the Government’s recent and ongoing work to prevent child sexual abuse, protect vulnerable people, and strengthen child sexual abuse laws.

These achievements include:

• providing an apology to victims and survivors of child sexual abuse;
• commencing participation in the National Redress Scheme;
• introducing legislation to create new laws which will strengthen criminal responses to child sexual abuse (including a new crime of failing to report a child abuse offence); and
• removing limitation periods for civil litigation relating to child abuse claims.

In 2019 the Government will progress work on key reforms, including:

• progressing civil litigation reform;
• delivering options for introducing Child Safe Organisations’ Principles across government and non-government organisations; and
• developing options for introducing a Reportable Conduct Scheme for Tasmania.

The Hodgman Liberal Government remains committed to better protecting our vulnerable children and supporting victims who have been affected.
