Housing Tasmania's $36 million Investment in Capital Works Program

The Liberal Government is committed to increasing the supply of affordable housing in Tasmania to assist vulnerable Tasmanians while also stimulating the local economy.

The Liberal Government's investment into the Housing Tasmania Capital Program in 2014-15 will deliver 363 new dwellings as well as 7 residential lots, and will also stimulate the Tasmanian economy by directly contributing $36 million into the building and construction sector.

This investment will also create approximately 270 direct jobs in the construction sector alone.

Some of the housing projects currently underway around the state are:

  • Shore Street, Rose Bay - Tasmanian construction company Wilson Homes has commenced construction on two, two-bedroom independent living units.
  • Watchorn Street, Launceston - Seven Tasmanians and their families will soon have a new home prior to Christmas with seven homes being built by Hazell Bros, which are due for completion this month.
  • Lindisfarne - The new 8 lot Atwell Court subdivision which was officially named in honour of WWI soldier Private Frederick Atwell earlier this month to acknowledge the importance of Remembrance day.
  • North Hobart - Tasmanian construction company Fairbrother commenced work in May 2014 on the exciting $14m Trinity Hill Youth Accommodation and Training Facility.

These affordable homes are being delivered at the same time as we are developing a ten year strategy for affordable housing.

The Affordable Housing Strategy will drive the State's future housing reform agenda as well as articulate a shared vision for improving access to safe and affordable homes. Development of the Strategy is progressing well and is expected to be completed by mid-2015.
