Housing Progress Continues

The Hodgman Liberal Government is working hard to deliver on a range of short, medium and long-term actions to ensure every Tasmanian has a roof over their head.

There is no doubt that Tasmania’s housing market is going through significant growth, with a number of contributing factors being the result of our strengthening economy.

The report released today by the Institute for the Study of Social Change again highlights the factors – including population growth, high job rate, influx of international students and the booming visitor economy – contributing to the current housing climate.

We are confident that supply and demand issues will adjust over time as we progress Government initiatives aimed at increasing housing stock, as well as the progression of tourism and university accommodation.

The Government is actively responding through our Affordable Housing Action Plan 2015-2019, which will assist over 1600 vulnerable Tasmanian households by June 2019, including supply of 941 new affordable lots and homes.

In addition, we are responding to concerns regarding compliance with short-term rental market regulations, and we plan to introduce legislation by the end of this year. Legislation will enforce the regulations we have already put in place.

We are also investing an additional $125 million into Stage Two of our Affordable Housing Action Plan, taking our total investment into affordable housing to almost $200 million over eight years.

Consultation on Stage Two of the Action Plan has commenced, and we look forward to working with the Institute for the Study of Social Change throughout this process.
