Housing Land Supply Bill passed to allow for more affordable homes

Today, the Hodgman Liberal Government’s Housing Land Supply Bill 2018 passed Parliament which will allow for more direct and efficient rezoning of Crown land for construction of affordable housing.

The legislation delivers on yet another action from our landmark Housing Summit held in March this year.

Importantly, the legislation puts in place clear mechanisms for consultation with local councils, adjoining land owners and service providers, so important planning considerations are not compromised.

This is the latest step the Government has taken to boost the supply of new housing to meet growing demand and follows this week’s ABS data which confirms a massive increase in dwellings being built in Tasmania.

In the March 2018 quarter, dwelling commencements were up 31.4 per cent compared to the same time last year. This was the highest growth rate in Australia and nearly ten times the national average.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to addressing Tasmania’s housing shortage and is delivering on the outcomes from the Housing Summit.
