Hobart International, Australia’s premier women’s tennis tournament

The Hobart International brings the world's best to Tasmania, and showcases the best of Tasmania to the world.

This year, 15 of the top 60 players will battle it out for the Hobart International title, including world number 24 and 2018 finalist, Mihaela Buzarnescu.

Tasmanian fans are in for a treat with some of the game’s best players in action, with six former top 20 players competing at the Domain Tennis Centre from 5-12 January 2019.

Of course, amazing events like this are only possible thanks to the efforts of passionate volunteers working behind the scenes and on court.

Today I had the opportunity to meet and personally thank some of the volunteers helping at this year’s event.

Tasmanians love the opportunity to watch world class Tennis in our own back yard. Every year thousands of locals and tourists flock to the Domain Tennis Centre to cheer on their favourites.

Tasmania has a great reputation for successfully hosting major events and festivals right across the year, and they play a major part in bringing visitors here, and enhancing the Tasmanian way of life.

The Tasmanian Government is a massive supporter of our visitor economy, and a key part of our plan is to support and develop popular events to help achieve our ambitious target of 1.5 million visitors to Tasmania by 2020.

During 2017-18 Events Tasmania supported 72 events, which attracted 82,000 visitors to the State, injecting about $82.5 million into our economy.
