Hobart hosts national hockey tournament

Today we welcome the country’s best up-and-coming players for the U18 Australian Hockey Championship, yet another great contest adding to a month of great events supported by the Tasmanian Liberal Government.

Good luck to the Tasmanian men’s and women’s teams – both will be looking to use their home-town advantage to knock off last year’s winners, Western Australia and Queensland, respectively.

The national championship is being held at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre in Hobart from 19-29 April and will feature some of our best home-grown young sportspeople.

The Government has invested nearly $500,000 into an arrangement with Hockey Australia to bring the nation’s best up-and-coming and masters competitors to compete in 10 tournaments over five years from 2016, and our commitment of $600,000 to replace artificial playing surfaces in Hobart and Launceston is now complete, just in time for the U18 Championships.

We support the Championships as a key part of our plan to grow tourism and the visitor economy, which supports local business and creates jobs.

They also allow local fans to experience great hockey in our own backyard, and to inspire people to get more involved in sport and recreation.

April has been a big month of events with Tasmania hosting the V8 Supercars, the Enduro World series mountain biking event, and two AFL games – all are supported financially by the Tasmanian Liberal Government because we know they fill our hotels and hospitality venues, provide great value-for-money, create jobs and stimulate the economy.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has a strong track record of investing in events and sport and is committed to initiatives that increase visitation in the traditionally quieter, cooler months.
