Historic Hobart Town painting on display at TMAG

One of Australia’s most important early-European paintings of Hobart is now on display at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG).

View of Hobart Town with Mount Wellington in the background, 1856, by the respected colonial artist Austrian-born, Eugene von Guerard, is recognised as a significant historical work.

The Hodgman Liberal Government welcomes the display of the work which has been made possible through the generosity of its owners, Bensons Property Group’s Elias and Colleen Jreissati, who have loaned the work to TMAG for a minimum of 12-months.

The painting is one of only a small number known to exist by the artist and it holds incredible geographical, historical, and cultural significance to Tasmania.

The work is on display alongside that of other well-known colonial artists including John Glover, Knut Bull, Henry Gritten, Haughton Forrest and William Duke.

The Jreissati’s have owned the work since 2016 and decided to loan the work to TMAG as they felt it was important for Tasmanian audiences to be able to view part of our history.

We are extremely grateful to the generosity of the Jreissati’s for lending this important work and I encourage Tasmanians and visitors alike to take advantage of the opportunity to view the work at TMAG.

View of Hobart Town with Mount Wellington in the background is on display in TMAG’s Dispossessions and Possessions colonial gallery until November 2018.
