I am very pleased the Cable Car Facilitation (kunanyi/Mount Wellington) Bill 2017 has today passed the second reading and committee stage without amendment in the Legislative Council.
The idea of a cable car on kunanyi/Mount Wellington has been around for over 100 years and it has taken a majority Liberal Government to progress real action on this exciting proposal.
Importantly, the Bill does not change the need for any cable car proposal to get all of the necessary approvals, including those that protect Tasmania’s natural environment, heritage and Aboriginal cultural values.
A cable car would be fantastic for tourism and showcase one of our most stunning natural landmarks, make the pinnacle more accessible to more people and it would create new jobs for Tasmanians.
I now look forward to the Bill being read a third time next week and passing into law shortly after.
