Heritage Register update

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to the protection, maintenance and celebration of our world class historic cultural heritage.

We recognise the important role the Tasmanian Heritage Register plays in the effective management of heritage of State significance.

We are committed to ensuring that the Register has integrity and credibility and is focused on the places that are important to the whole of Tasmania for present and future generations.

To help us achieve this the Tasmanian Heritage Council is reviewing all entries on the register to ensure that the information held is correct and to confirm that all entries meet the criteria for entry on the register in accordance with Tasmanian legislation.

The review has involved researchers going through historical records, texts, photographs, maps and surveys as well as conducting street side visits or using online maps and other resources to view places.

Under the leadership of Ms Brett Torossi, the Heritage Council is methodically working its way through the entries on the register and is identifying entries that are candidates for removal.

The Heritage Council has now commenced the process for removal in accordance with the Act.

The first part of the process is to give notice to owners and the first tranche of letters has been sent to owners of properties in Launceston this week. That notification will be followed by public notices and the opportunity for public submissions.

I encourage any person with relevant information regarding a place proposed for removal to make a submission.

All properties which meet the criteria for places of state heritage significance will remain on the register.

The Government will continue to protect all places of state heritage significance.

We commend the Heritage Council for its hard work in seeking to improve the integrity of the Tasmanian Heritage Register and getting on with the job of ensuring the effective management, protection and showcasing of Tasmania's extraordinary historic cultural heritage for the benefit of all Tasmanians.
