Helping hand for rare Tasmanian Handfish species

I am pleased to announce $10 000 has been committed by the Hodgman Majority Liberal Government to kick-start the fundraising effort for endangered Handfish species today.

All money raised through the new Handfish Conservation Project Funding Campaign will be used to help stop the decline and support the recovery of Tasmania’s Red, Spotted and Ziebell’s handfish.

These unique fish prefer to walk on their ‘hands’ rather than swim and are listed under both State and Commonwealth Environmental legislation to help protect the species.

Handfish are one of the few species that have survived virtually unchanged since dinosaurs roamed the Earth and are only found in Tasmanian waters.

Our Government is committed to protecting our threatened species and ensuring their ongoing survival.

Donations can be made at the Handfish Conservation Project website handfish.org.au
