The people of Tasmania now have a team all of Tasmania can get behind after the league finalised its agreement with the Tasmanian Government to issue a licence to participate in the 2021/2022 NBL Season earlier this month.
Now all of Tasmania can get behind the search to find a name for the new team, after the NBL today launched its four-week campaign to name the team.
Our Government is urging Tasmanians of all ages to get creative and help find a name that is unique to our beautiful State as we work towards re-entering the NBL for the first time in 25 years.
Tasmanians can submit up to three names each at www.nbltas.com.au and at the same time have the opportunity to win four season tickets, a signed inaugural jersey and a chance to meet the players from the new team.
This is a tremendous opportunity for Tasmanians to embrace our brand new team. We have so much to celebrate when it comes to our rich sporting history and culture in Tasmania.
I am confident that the passion of Tasmanians who have wanted a team of their own back in the NBL will see some inspiring names put forward for consideration.
There is no doubt a Tasmanian NBL team will increase the profile of basketball in our state, which will benefit home-grown talent in players, coaching and administration. The Tasmanian Government is the greatest supporter of fostering genuine sporting pathways from grassroots to elite level.
The Sponsorship Agreement between our Government and the National Basketball League will provide for 14 home games in Tasmania, 11 of which will be at the Derwent Entertainment Centre and the remainder in the north of the State.
I look forward to not only hearing what Tasmanians come up with for the potential name of the club, but eventually attending the first home game of the new team.
