Help plan for the active ageing of Tasmanians

The Hodgman Liberal Government is contributing to the development of an Active Ageing Plan which will recognise the major contribution ageing Tasmanians can make to the social and economic growth of Tasmania.

Beginning today, Tasmanians are being asked for their opinion to help shape ageing in Tasmania and develop a relevant and robust Tasmanian Active Ageing Plan.

``We know that Tasmania has the oldest and most rapidly ageing population of all Australian states, so it is important that all Tasmanians, young and older, have input into the Plan,’’ Ms Courtney said.

This state-wide community consultation and Active Ageing Plan is being funding by $125,000 from the Tasmanian Government and will be done in a collaboration between the Government and the Council Of  The Aging (COTA) Tasmania.

``The Active Ageing Plan is about more than being physically active. We need the views of Tasmanians to help shape opinions and future strategies because as we age we still want to belong and be involved in our communities,’’ Ms Courtney said.

Sue Leitch, CEO of COTA: ``The Plan will have a positive view of ageing and recognise that older Tasmanians have a wealth of knowledge and experience that can help build a more inclusive and vibrant community and support the social and economic growth of the State.

``It is the role of the community, government and business to create place and a culture of support for active ageing, so COTA, on behalf of the Government, is seeking community opinion to assist in shaping a new strategy.

``It’s our expectation that we will harness this valuable local advice to create an Active Ageing Strategy and Plan which will respond to the needs, views and opinions of a wide range of older Tasmanians and those who care about them,’’ Sue Leitch said.
