Heating investment for social housing welcome before winter

Housing Choices Tasmania will bring more warmth to hundreds of homes on the North-West Coast ahead of the cold winter months, and demonstrates that the Government’s increased engagement with community housing providers delivers great outcomes for Tasmanians in need.

The Hodgman Liberal Government welcomes today’s $750,000 announcement by Housing Choices Tasmania, which will provide new heating for tenants in social housing properties.

Three hundred homes right across North-West Tasmania will receive new heat pumps in time for winter, when they will be needed most. The new heat pumps should be installed by the end of June.

The announcement is further evidence of how tenants benefit directly from the Liberal Government working closely with community housing providers.

This also debunks Labor’s scaremongering about our efforts to engage more with community housing providers to deliver better outcomes for Tasmanians in need.

Under our Affordable Housing Action Plan, the Government plans to build 900 new homes and provide housing for an additional 1600 vulnerable Tasmanians, which is achievable through working with partners such as the community sector.

Amendments to the Homes Act 1935, which are currently before Parliament, will ensure the broadening needs of vulnerable Tasmanians who seek housing assistance are met, and strengthen the partnerships between the Government, the community housing sector and the private sector to deliver more affordable homes and housing support.

Ongoing innovative partnerships between the Government and community housing providers are vital in ensuring we can provide a housing system that benefits Tasmanians in need of housing support, as well as providing new homes and housing upgrades.
