Public comment is now invited on the Draft Freycinet Peninsula Master Plan which has been prepared to deliver a high quality environmentally, economically and socially sustainable Freycinet visitor experience for the next 20 years.
The plan was developed following consultation with key stakeholders over the past eight months and identifies five key initiatives.
Freycinet is one of Tasmania’s premier tourism hotspots, with locals and visitors flocking to the area to experience the region’s stunning natural beauty.
Visitation at Freycinet National Park has increased from 186,000 in 2011-12 to 301,000 in 2017-18 and it is likely that by 2020 this could increase to as many as 330,000 visitors per year.
The Draft Freycinet Peninsula Master Plan aims to protect and manage the values that make the Freycinet Peninsula special for both visitors and locals, while ensuring it can continue to play an important part in the Tasmanian tourism industry and remain a world-class visitor destination.
The plan was developed with input from the community and a steering committee comprised of representatives from the Department of State Growth, Glamorgan Spring Bay Council, East Coast Tourism, the Freycinet Association Inc and Freycinet Destination Action Plan group.
Five initiatives identified as key to resolving the visitor growth challenge are: a visitor gateway hub; an entrance corridor; experience nodes; a network of transport connections; and a staged approach to sewerage treatment.
The Draft Freycinet Peninsula Master Plan is available at www.parks.tas.gov.au and comments should be received by 9am Monday 23 July 2018.
