Have a safe bet this footy finals

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to supporting gambling harm minimisation measures.

That is why I am proud to support the Government’s Know Your Odds Skate Skoot Competition in conjunction with the Clarence City Council at the ST’ART event at Rosny Park today, which is helping to promote the good work of the Know Your Odds Community Partnership Program aimed at reducing the social impact of gambling on young people.

The Government’s Know Your Odds Community Partnership Program is a proud supporter of skateboard, scooter and BMX competitions, so as to provide healthy alternatives to gambling.

The ST’ART event will feature such a competition and I will be helping to hand out $1700 in prizes, including for the Open Girls competition.

It’s also vital to recognise that while having a punt on your favourite sport is ok, it has to be done in moderation.

With just weeks left before the biggest finals games of the year, it’s important to also highlight the Government’s Get Back to the Real Game sports betting education campaign.

This campaign will be launched on Thursday, September 1 and urges young men to consider the impacts of sports betting on their life, including the encroachment of betting on their favourite sport and the disconnection from friends and family that excessive gambling can cause.

Research commissioned by the Department of Health and Human Services found young men with higher socio-economic status, employed full-time, better educated, and with access to the internet were the best group to target.

This campaign has been designed to target young men where they place bets, on digital devices, and includes online ads, still images and a 15 second TV commercial.

Audiences clicking on the ads are directed to the Know Your Odds sports betting page which provides information and links to self-assessment and self-help tools.

The ads will also be targeted to the days and times around which games are scheduled.

A second campaign will run in late December 2016 and early January 2017, and will have a cricket focus and coincide with the Big Bash League cricket tournament.
