Growing tourism in North East Tasmania

The North East of Tasmania is increasingly recognised as a must-visit destination for visitors to our state with a growing list of attractions and events.

The Tasmanian Government has partnered with the local community and with Tourism Northern Tasmania to produce a Destination Action Plan (DAP) for North East Tasmania and Dorset.

This is about growing regional tourism so that communities right across Tasmania share in the benefits of the visitor economy, particularly through creating new jobs – our Government’s number one priority.

As part of our Plan to Build Your Future, we have set a target of getting 70 per cent of all visitors to Tasmania to stay overnight in a regional area – like the North East – and the North East DAP will be integral to this plan.

The North East is already popular with tourists with Derby (up 33.2%) and Scottsdale (up 13.8%) achieving healthy growth in the past year.

The DAP addresses the challenges facing the local tourism industry in reaching its potential and prioritises projects aimed at developing an enhanced visitor experience.

The better the experience for our visitors, the longer they will stay, the more they will spend and the more likely they will be to come back and also to tell others.

The North East Tasmania and Dorset DAP has four key priorities:

  1. Create more cohesion and support industry development within North East visitor economy.
  2. Improve effectiveness of communication to visitors and locals,
  3. Leverage of North East icons such as Blue Derby Trails, Barnbougle Golf, and Bridgestowe Lavender Estate.
  4. Advocate for better infrastructure and new investment.

A North East Tasmania and Dorset Destination Plan Leadership Group will assist in the implementation of the many actions identified in the plan.

As we head towards our goal of 1.5 million visitors a year by 2020, it is important that we work with local communities like those in North East Tasmania to give visitors the best experience possible, and encourage them to stay longer, wherever they journey to across the state.
