Growing our piece of the national travel pie

Tasmania has outperformed its interstate rivals in growing its share of the national travel market.

The National Visitor Survey released today shows Tasmania recorded a 14 per cent increase in interstate trips over the last year to March 2017 – that was the highest growth of any jurisdiction.

Australians took 29.8 million interstate overnight trips during the year and Tasmania’s share of that was four per cent confirming that our visitor economy is on track to reach our T21 goals.

The number of intrastate overnight trips in Tasmania increased by one per cent to 1.29 million in the year to March 2017 compared to the previous 12 months.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to building on its competitive strengths, especially the visitor economy.

The Tasmanian Visitor Survey results for the year to March 2017 are due shortly and provide the most accurate and comprehensive statistics on interstate visitors to Tasmania. The NVS however provides the only means of estimating Tasmania’s share of the national travel market and the only measure of intrastate travel.

All visitor figures confirm we are on track to reach our target of attracting 1.5 million visitors a year to our state, $2.47 billion in annual visitor spending, and growing visitor satisfaction, regional dispersal and jobs by 2020.

We are continuing to invest in our award-winning and record-breaking tourism and hospitality industries with $37 million in the 2017-18 State Budget.
