Government committed to reducing congestion

The Hodgman Liberal Government is providing leadership to prevent major traffic congestion events in the Greater Hobart region ahead of school returning next week.

Last week we announced the commencement of a trial of free Metro buses before 7am, and also that Tasmania Police will be extra vigilant when addressing any driver and pedestrian behaviours that add to congestion

The return to school is traditionally one of the busiest times on the road, and I urge all those using the roads to think ahead and to leave home earlier, and consider taking advantage of a free metro bus.

Additionally, commuters can also think about other travel options to avoid the early-morning rush such as walking, cycling, ride-sharing, or leaving home after the peak periods between 7.30-9am.

Motorists can rest assured we will be keeping a close eye on the management of traffic to ensure the impact on road users will be as minimal as possible

My Department will be actively monitoring and managing traffic flows through its Hobart Traffic Control Centre, and radio updates from the Traffic Control Centre on traffic flows will be available daily each weekday morning on ABC radio.

The Government has also worked with civil contractors to ensure any relevant roadworks have been scheduled to minimise impact on traffic flows during peak periods.

At works on the Southern Outlet / Olinda Grove interchange near Mt Nelson, two city-bound lanes will remain open to traffic during the morning peak, and traffic management will be in place at the new Olinda Grove Roundabout to address queuing at the top of the Southern Outlet.

Traffic congestion is a side effect of a growing economy however the Hodgman Government is committed to reducing these congestion issues.
