Good Luck to Tasmania's Commonwealth Games Athletes in Glasgow

Best wishes to Tasmania's Commonwealth Games contingent who have today taken part in the opening of the 20th Games.

Seven Tasmanian athletes are representing Australia in five sports, equalling the number of athletes our state produced for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

They'll be among more than 400 Australian athletes competing across the 11 days of competition and 17 sporting disciplines.

Five of our seven competitors are making their Games debut; cyclist Amy Cure, boxers Jackson Woods and Nick Cooney and track and field athletes Hamish and Huw Peacock.

Devonport cyclist Amy Cure will be the first Tasmanian to hit the Commonwealth Games' stage, with the 3,000 metre individual pursuit commencing tomorrow night.

If she's successful, she could be riding for gold in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Tasmania's most decorated competing Commonwealth Games athlete, hockey player Eddie Ockenden, will be playing for a second successive gold when the Kookaburras take to the field from Saturday.

The Kookaburras are rated among the country's best gold medal chances, having won gold at all four Games in which hockey has been included.

Launceston weightlifter Jenna Myers is also returning to the Commonwealth Games platform for a second time, having finished sixth in 2010.

To represent both Tasmania and the country is a great honour. I know Tasmanians wish our athletes the best of luck.
