Getting on with business by securing gas deal for Tasmania

The Government is getting on with business and securing real outcomes for the people of Tasmania.

Gas costs are a significant cost of living issue for many Tasmanian households and businesses and continuity of supply is critical for the State’s economy.  That is why I welcome the arbitration outcome between Hydro Tasmania and the Tasmanian Gas Pipeline.

Both parties have confirmed they will accept the terms outlined by the arbitrator, which will provide certainty, especially for larger customers. Core Tasmanian industries such as mineral processing and advanced manufacturing rely heavily on natural gas.

This outcome ensures energy security, providing continuity to industry and business and underpins confidence in our economy, which is in the best interests of the State.

Gas remains an important energy source for our State, for industry, for small businesses, and also for households, and provides an essential element of energy security through the Tamar Valley Power Station.

As there are very strict confidentiality provisions in relation to arbitration processes conducted under the National Gas Rules, I am not able to comment further on the specifics of the arbitration outcome.
