Gambling support for family and friends

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to supporting Tasmanians directly and indirectly impacted by gambling.

This Government takes the issue of gambling very seriously, and we know the impacts of gambling can be far reaching. Gambling affects not only the individual but also their family, their friends, and even the wider community.

Stage 2 of the Gambling Support Programs Family and Friends campaign has started so as to help raise awareness of the local support services available to people affected by their friend or family member’s gambling.

The campaign consists of a television advertisement, poster distribution, and targeted letter box drop in East Devonport and Northern Launceston suburbs. The campaign will direct family and friends to Gamblers Help, and provide information regarding the risks and harms to the family and friends of a person with gambling problems or when they may be at risk of harm.

Asking the questions “Does someone in your family gamble too much?” and “Is it a constant worry, keeping you awake at night?”, the campaign highlights the negative and wide ranging impacts a person’s gambling can have on those around them.

Gambling is not only a personal issue but is also a community issue, and the Government has developed a number of clear policy positions that we want the community to have the opportunity to comment on in a transparent way.

For example, even though the ultimate decision on the future of gaming isn’t required until the trigger point in 2019, we have already outlined the guiding principles on key structural elements of the gaming sector from 2023 onwards.

The Government has also announced that it will reduce the overall number of pokies in the State, with a public interest test applying to any new application for pokies in Tasmania, and we will reform Tasmania’s gambling framework.

The Hodgman Liberal Government will always support those who are vulnerable and need support, and we are working towards a brighter future for the people of this state.
