The Tasmanian Government is proudly backing the $260 million move of the University of Tasmania Launceston campus from Newnham to Inveresk.
This will create a state-of-the-art University at Inveresk, 430 jobs during construction, attract up to 10,000 students and transform the opportunities for the region through education and the advantages of being a University City.
Today the Tasmanian Government, as part of the Northern Cities Major Development Initiative, is making a significant first $10 million Grant Deed payment to UTAS as part of our $60 million commitment to the project.
The Deed has been negotiated with UTAS and the Office of the Co-Ordinator General in relation to the University’s Masterplan for the new campus and Inveresk Precinct.
The Masterplan offers unprecedented opportunities for integrating education, sport and the arts along with the connections to the city with a new walking and cycling bridge and the possibilities of working more closely with LINC.
The heart of the site will be a Village Green which will offer Launceston another great gathering place for community, sporting, cultural and University activities.
Of great interest is the proposal for Willis St which will provide a connection to City Park and Albert Hall and the opportunity for co-location of business and research in areas such as wood science, food science and sport and health science.
Today’s $10 million Deed Grant is part of the Tasmanian Government’s commitment to the campus relocation and what it will achieve for Launceston and the region and I commend the University and the City of Launceston on working to develop such a visionary Masterplan.
