A fuel reduction burn around St Marys has helped to protect the town from a fast-moving bushfire.
The area around St Marys had previously been identified as higher risk for bushfires and a fuel reduction burn was completed in March this year. This burn reduced the fuel load and significantly slowed this particular bushfire as it was heading towards St Marys, allowing local fire crews to contain it successfully.
We came to office promising to significantly increase fuel reduction burning across Tasmania to better protect towns such as St Marys from dangerous bushfires, and this is a great example of how this policy is working to save Tasmanian lives, property and communities.
That’s why we are investing $55 million in the Fuel Reduction program and we have a bold target to decrease the bushfire risk to Tasmanian lives and properties by 33 per cent by 2022.
The target is welcome news for Tasmanians and was badly needed after Labor, captive to the Greens, ignored proper investment during their time in Government.
