Freezer factories one step closer to being banned in Tasmanian waters.

Controversial super trawlers are a step closer to being banned in Tasmania, after the House of Assembly supported the Hodgman Liberal Government’s bill to outlaw them.

Tasmanian recreational fishers everywhere will breathe a sigh of relief.

The Fisheries (Scalefish) Rules 2015 Bill will now be debated in the Upper House.

This Bill fulfils an election commitment by the Tasmanian Government to protect the small pelagic fishery from the impact of super trawlers.

Recreational fishers have been extremely concerned about the potential impact of large factory freezer super trawlers.

Tasmanians have been worried about the potential for a future government to allow factory freezers back into Tasmanian waters.

We listened to these concerns and have taken action so that if any future government tries to reverse the ban, they will have to pass an Act of Parliament.

Super trawlers are a threat to Tasmania's fisheries and to our recreational lifestyle, and the Government is committed to seeing the back of them.

Once again I say, good riddance to bad rubbish.
