Flooding in Huon Valley

Once again our Huon Valley community has been affected by floodwater as wild weather conditions pass over the south of the state.

I am advised that to date the SES has had over 50 requests for assistance in the Southern Region. Including six properties in Huonville that have suffered inundation and one where the residents needed to evacuate.

I would like to thank the SES and Tasmanian emergency services for their swift mobilisation and actions to make community safety a priority, including the crew of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter for the rescue of five people stranded in a field near Huonville.

The SES and other volunteer services have been working hard to prevent further damage to properties, helping residents prepare sandbags to protect houses.

While this flood event is not as serious as the event in July, it is a set-back for local residents and business owners who were getting on with recovery.

I am certain that once again the people of the Huon Valley will come together again to assist with the clean up after this recent event, and I would again like to thank our dedicated emergency services for the service they provide to our community.

SES crews remain on standby and affected local residents should not hesitate to call 132 500 for assistance.
