ABS statistics released today have revealed that Tasmania’s population has increased by 720 people in the September quarter 2016 to 519,783.
This is the highest population growth in five years, and justifies our ambitious population strategy that has a target to increase Tasmania’s population to 650,000 by 2050.
The Hodgman Liberal Government recognises the importance of population growth and these great figures will have a positive flow on effect in regard to job creation, strengthening the economy and creating a strong and diverse community.
The ABS estimated Tasmania’s natural population increase for the September 2016 quarter was 222 people, compared to 172 in the same quarter the previous year.
Overseas migration led the way recording a net inflow of 411 persons during the quarter.
Interstate migration registered a net inflow of 87 people to the state.
While these results are promising, we realise we still have some way to go to reach our 2050 target and we will continue to work hard to entice people to the state by growing our economy and creating jobs.
