Fighting for Tasmania’s fair share of renewable energy funding

The Hodgman Government will always stand up for Tasmania’s interests and fight for our fair share of federal funding.

On Monday, I will lead a delegation to meet with the Prime Minister in Canberra to discuss exciting opportunities to reinvest in and modernise our existing hydro system, explore options for new generation and explore the potential for pumped hydro.

Developing pumped hydro has the ability to increase the amount of renewable energy that we can contribute to the national grid and the Government looks forward to discussing this further with the Prime Minister, who has taken a strong personal interest in this issue and is showing significant leadership in this area.

The Prime Minister’s announcement this week that he will make available up to $2 billion of federal funding for the Snowy hydro initiative shows that he is prepared to fund renewable energy projects that are in the national interest.  There is no doubt that Tasmania has a compelling case to make that investing in our hydro infrastructure will provide significant benefits not just to the State but to the nation as well and I look forward to discussing that with the Prime Minister.
