Ferries, buses and traffic management for Blundstone blockbuster

The Hodgman Liberal Government has put in place a range of public transport options for the sell-out AFL match between North Melbourne and Richmond at Blundstone Arena this Friday.

As with any large and well attended event, traffic issues are expected, particularly given it is scheduled for Friday evening.

The Liberal Government has ensured a number of measures in order to reduce expected congestion ahead of the match.

Metro Tasmania has made an extra 31 services available to the venue for this sell-out game, which will be supported by the RACT’s Park and Ride “Royal Coach’’ free bus service. This means more buses will be available than ever before to help people get to and from the game.

We have also put a free ferry service in place with the assistance of two ferries from Roche Brothers, which will operate between the Brooke Street Pier and Bellerive Quay. The ferry service will provide the capacity to take up to 2000 people from Hobart’s shores to the game and back again.

To clear intersections depending upon traffic congestion and to give priority to the Metro services, Tasmania Police will activate pre-match traffic control and take over the lights at a number of intersections including Kangaroo Bay (Eastlands), the Rosny Roundabout,  Shoreline drive and Clarence Streets and the intersections of Market Place and Macquarie Streets.

I urge all those attending the game to either take the free bus and ferry options, or to carpool to the game to reduce vehicle traffic.

Ticket-holders should also consider leaving for the game early, with gates opening early at 5.30pm.

For those driving to Blundstone Arena, motorists are urged to avoid Rosny Hill Road as it is prone to delays. Use the South Arm Highway/Clarence street route to avoid congestion, be patient and obey all road signs and Police directions.

We confidently expect that ticket-holders will get to the game on time using the provided public transport options and that all road users will understand the positive reasons for some short-term congestion on Friday evening.
