Feedback is now being sought on plans to replace visitor facilities at the Windermere overnight node on the Overland Track, within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
The project forms part of the Tasmanian Government’s commitment to improve the standard and quality of older huts and facilities along the multi-day track, with the new hut at Waterfall Valley now operational.
These upgrades are part of our $80 million investment across four years in our parks and reserves that will ensure our natural assets are protected for generations to come while providing world-class experiences that match the expectations of visitors and locals alike.
This project has been carefully planned so that walkers may continue to use existing facilities while new upgrades are completed. This reduces the disruption to track walkers during construction.
I encourage anyone interested to view the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Windermere hut node, which includes plans to replace the public hut, construct a new toilet, a new greywater system and a new group platform site. The existing rangers quarters will be retained and former hut and toilet sites will be rehabilitated, once the new facilities are operational.
