The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to addressing Tasmania’s housing shortage and delivering on the outcomes from the Housing Summit.
The Housing Land Supply Bill 2018, introduced today, delivers on another action of the Housing Summit and provides for a more direct and efficient process for rezoning parcels of Crown land, making that land available to build more houses, sooner.
The Bill establishes a process for rapidly rezoning surplus Crown land and land owned by Housing Tasmania, for altering the planning rules applicable to such land and for the transfer of any rezoned Crown land to the Director of Housing.
This ensures the land identified and rezoned is managed in accordance with the Homes Act 1935.
The rezoning of land can sometimes be a lengthy process. This Bill will reduce the time of that process for identified government-owned land, so we can deliver more affordable homes faster.
It will also put in place appropriate mechanisms for consultation with local councils, adjoining land owners and service providers, so important planning considerations are not compromised.
This is the latest step the Tasmanian Government is taking to boost the supply of new housing to meet growing demand.
