New farm employees will be provided with a farm safety handbook to raise awareness about on-farm work health and safety from today.
The Hodgman Liberal Government has invested over $1 million in the Safe Farming Tasmania Program, working to reduce the rate of farm workplace injuries and fatalities, and make safety culture a permanent fixture on Tasmanian farms.
Our farming families and rural communities are our greatest asset, and investing in our people is critical if we are to grow the value of agriculture to $10 billion by 2050.
The farm is also a unique work environment, where family homes are often part of the workplace.
The Safe Farming Tasmania Induction Handbook and video contains work health and safety information, and will assist farmers with practical workplace inductions for new employees.
The handbook will help new employees better identify the hazards and risks that may be present in their work environment.
Under the Safe Farming Tasmania Program a dedicated farm safety consultant works directly with farmers to raise awareness.
Feedback from farmers is that the program is having a positive impact through practical tools like the farm safety handbook and by raising awareness of farm safety issues, encouraging discussion and changing behaviours to improve on-farm work health and safety.
