The Tasmanian majority Liberal Government is delivering its long term plan to keep cost of living pressures low for Tasmanians by expanding its bus concession fare eligibility.
From tomorrow, as part of the broader improvements to Tasmania’s public transport network, the existing adult urban concession categories will be extended to travel in non-urban areas, meaning cheaper or free travel on public bus services for people living in rural and regional areas.
The discounts and concessions aim to achieve a balance in the standard of living and access to essential services for Tasmanians.
Those eligible include individuals who are holders of Australian Government Health Care Cards, Centrelink Pensioner Cards or Veterans Affairs Pensioner Cards and Seniors Cards, as well as for anyone aged 70 and over, and those classified as war widows by the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
The changes will also see free travel on non-urban routes extended to Tasmanian Police and Ambulance officers in uniform, the vision impaired plus their guide dog and companion, and those on a DVA Special Rate Disability Pension.
At the same time, some minor fare adjustments are being made on some routes as we progress to a new state-wide fare structure for all general access services.
The changes to these fares is a key step in integrating our bus services across different operators, ensuring everyone pays a similar price for comparable services.
As a reminder, the highly anticipated improvements to bus services across Launceston and the north also begin this Sunday, so please check your new timetables so you don’t miss the bus.
