EU free trade negotiations welcomed

The Tasmanian Government welcomes the announcement today that the Turnbull Government is launching negotiations with the European Union on a Free Trade Agreement.

Today’s announcement will support our objective to support Tasmanian businesses to increase their international export potential into new markets with a level playing field that the FTA should provide.

The European Union is a growing market for Tasmanian premium products and produce, and we will work closely with the Commonwealth to maximise the opportunities for our exporters.

In the year to April 2018, Tasmania’s total exports reached $3.54 billion – an increase of 35 per cent compared to the previous year, three times the national rate of export growth.

To lock in continued growth the Government is this year developing Tasmania’s first Trade Strategy to provide the strategic direction to take our trade to the next level.
