Enjoying outdoor events

More Tasmanians will be able to enjoy outdoor gatherings due to the further easing of restrictions announced today.

From next Friday the 25th September, capacity at outdoor events will increase to a maximum of 1000 people. Maximum density limits of two square metres of space per person will continue to apply and events must have a thorough COVID safety plan that addresses all the risks of their activities.

“I welcome the news that many of our smaller scale, outdoor niche and community events will be able to go ahead while others like Salamanca and the Harvest Market can increase their patron capacity,” the Minister for Small Business, Hospitality and Events Sarah Courtney said.

“While the increase in outdoor gathering numbers will enable a number of activities being planned to go ahead, it is important for event organisers to remember the requirements they must comply with to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission to their staff and patrons,” Minister Courtney said.

The easing of outdoor crowd limits will also be a major boost for the sporting sector in the lead-up to the winter season finals.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Jane Howlett said “I know this will be welcomed by the many sporting associations who rely on the financial boost of strong attendances during finals.”

“This announcement has come at the right time for the many regional sporting associations, particularly AFL competitions, who can look forward to a boost from gate and canteen takings” Minister Howlett said.

We are encouraging Tasmanians to keep getting out and supporting local events. However, please continue to observe the gathering restrictions, maintain appropriate physical distancing, stay home if you are unwell and keep up good hygiene practices as we strive to avoid a second wave of the virus in Tasmania.
