End of Financial Year Sales

Tasmanian consumers are urged to be aware of their consumer rights as the end-of-financial-year sale period starts.

The Australian Consumer Law (ACL) applies to purchases regardless of whether an item is on sale or not. All products have consumer guarantees assigned by law.

The ACL prevents retailers from stating, “No refunds on sale items”, because if the goods are defective, you may be able to get a refund.

Products should be fit for purpose, defect free, and match an advertised description.

If a product fails to meet the consumer guarantees, you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund. The scale of the problem will determine whether the retailer or consumer chooses the remedy.

Some stores will offer a refund or exchange for change-of-mind purchases, however this is not a legal requirement and may not be offered for sale items.

For further information about your consumer rights, please contact Consumer, Building and Occupational Services on 1300 654 499 or visit the website www.cbos.tas.gov.au
