Employers Helping Jobseekers to be Work Ready

The Liberal Government is committed to helping businesses create jobs and grow the economy.

I am very pleased to announce a new partnership between the Government and the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (TCCI) to deliver a new training project designed to increase the work-readiness of jobseekers.

The Liberal Government is providing a grant of $209,000 to the TCCI to establish the project, which will be piloted on the North West.

This project is a first for Tasmania. It is a unique opportunity for employers to communicate what they want from jobseekers, directly to those jobseekers.

Jobseekers will learn these skills and have opportunities to practise them in real workplaces.

This will not only make participants employable at the end of the program but means employers looking to recruit have access to people with the skills they are looking for.

The project will involve 60 jobseekers in total, 10 in the initial pilot on the North West and another 50 in the second stage as it is trialled across the state.

I congratulate the TCCI on this initiative which supports the Liberal Government's efforts to help businesses create jobs and tackle unemployment in Tasmania.

TCCI CEO Michael Bailey said that through the project the TCCI will also develop a process so that employers can be confident that an individual is ready to work when they are recruited.

"Employers often reported that prospective employees are unable to demonstrate work readiness," Mr Bailey said.

"The partnership between the government and the TCCI shows how government is closely engaging with industry to address this and grow the state and its workforce."
