Elwick track replacement approved

The Elwick thoroughbred racing tracks will be replaced with a single 28-metre-wide track providing first class facilities and ensuring the long term future of racing in Southern Tasmania.

This is a significant investment made possible by the Hodgman Liberal Government getting Tasracing into a sustainable business position where it is able to look at re-investment in much needed infrastructure.

Tasracing undertook extensive consultation with industry representatives, clubs and organisations, and the Australian Trainers Association has endorsed the single track option.

The final design and cost of the project will be determined when suitably recognised thoroughbred track suppliers complete the formal tender process which opens tomorrow.

Dalton Consulting Engineers completed the concept design work for the Elwick track project.

A number of Tasmanian-based companies are set to benefit from the multi-million dollar project.

  • Leading turf supplier StrathAyr will plant approximately 65,000 square metres of specially selected turf to Tasracing’s specifications for the project.
  • The successful head contractor will be required to engage with civil contractors that have been pre-approved by the Department of State Growth.
  • Specialist irrigation, fencing, electrical and other suitably qualified Tasmanian businesses will also have the opportunity to participate in the track redevelopment project.

Construction work is planned to start after the running of the 2019 Hobart Cup in March.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is a strong supporter of the Tasmanian racing industry and investments like this in significant infrastructure will further stimulate the racing industry.
