The Hodgman Liberal Government is delivering on our plan to protect victims and their children from family violence, with perpetrators now being fitted with electronic monitoring devices, which are locked around the ankle.
Our $2.5 million trial, in partnership with the Morrison Liberal Government, has now commenced where priority family violence offenders are monitored electronically via GPS.
This initiative is part of the Government’s commitment to keep Tasmanians safe and is designed to reduce and deter family violence, and enhance safety of victims by increasing accountability of perpetrators.
The bands can track an offender’s movements and ensure they are excluded from entering certain areas where the victim resides or works.
Under the trial, selected victims of family violence will also have the opportunity to voluntarily opt in to the program, wearing a small discreet duress device to prompt early police intervention where a potential breach is identified.
The initiative not only provides extra comfort and safety to victims, but provides additional evidence in court, corroborating the truthful version of events and, in some cases, preventing victims from having to attend court to give evidence at all.
Eliminating family violence is a top priority for the Hodgman Liberal Government. Violence in any form is unacceptable and we are determined to do all we can to prevent family violence and protect victims as part of our suite of reforms on law and order.
